About the Gavin Walkley Architectural Collection

This historical collection of old, rare and facsimile reprints of classic works in architecture, building and planning had its genesis in the founding of the Louis Laybourne Smith School of Architecture in 1906, when Louis' small personal collection of books formed the beginnings of the departmental library.

This library later became the Built Environment Library of the University of South Australia, and its collection formed the core of the Gavin Walkley Collection which was established in 1976 upon Gavin's retirement as Head of School after 25 years.

To this collection of material were added various notebooks and personally signed books belonging to Louis Laybourne Smith and Gavin Walkley.

These works can be searched via the Catalogue. Limit to Collection: City West Gavin Walkley Collection. They have the location Special Collection and GW as a prefix to the classification number e.g.

The Collection is located on the 2nd floor of the Jeffrey Smart building. UniSA staff and students are welcome to access these works for 4 hour in Library use only. Longer loan periods can be arranged if materials are needed for teaching purposes.

Some of the material is very fragile, and access is then at the discretion of the Manager, Academic Library Services.
