What is a standard?

"Standards are documents setting out specifications, procedures and guidelines. They are designed to ensure products, services and systems are safe, reliable and consistent."

There are 3 kinds of standards:
- International
- Regional
- National
Standards are developed by various bodies, agencies, trade and professional association. Some standards are voluntary others are enforced by legislation - mandatory.

The National Construction Code (NCC)
The National Construction Code (NCC) comprises the Building Code of Australia (BCA) volumes 1 and 2, and the Plumbing Code of Australia (PCA) as volume 3.
Use the NCC Standards Interactive House- simply pick a room to begin.

A print version of the NCC is also available in the Library at the City East campus.

"The Building Code of Australia (BCA), in the National Construction Code series, contains technical provisions for the design and construction of buildings and other structures. The BCA addresses the following matters:
- structural adequacy
- fire resistance
- access and egress
- services and equipment
- energy efficiency and sustainability
- provisions for the health and amenity of occupants.
The BCA is produced and maintained by the Australian Building Codes Board on behalf of the Australian government and state and territory governments."
