What you need to do

For assessment 2 you need to:

  • Read the case study given.
  • Identify its main principles and concepts.
  • Research these by searching for relevant academic (scholarly) sources.

The library holds a range of databases (search tools) to help you find scholarly information.

How you can search

Before you start searching watch or read:

Start by using the Library catalogue. The catalogue can be a good place to find academic (scholarly) sources such as books and journal articles.

  • Start by typing each of your different concepts into the search box.

  • For any phrases use double quotes around them, for example "change management", to keep them together.
     
  • Add any more concepts to your search. The more concepts you add the smaller your results will become.

  • Use the left menu to limit your results. Some key limits you can use are:
    • Format: Book / Journals - to find specific types of information.
    • Peer reviewed journal - useful for finding academic (scholarly) articles.
    • Publication date - useful for finding recent information.

Searching in databases

It is recommended that you also search for relevant academic (scholarly) literature using library databases.

Business Source Complete search example

  • Start by typing each different concept on a new line. Notice these are connected using AND.

Tip: Use double quotes around around phrases to keep them together, for example "organisational culture".

  • Select Search. Take note of your results.
     
  • You can add any synonyms or alternative concepts to your search using the connector OR.

  • Select Search. Notice how your results change by adding the alternative concept "corporate culture".
     
  • Use the left menu to limit your search further. Select:
    • Scholarly (Peer Reviewed) Journals


Emerald Insight search tips

  • Select the Advanced search option.
  • Similar to Business Source Complete add each different concept on a new line. These are connected using AND.
  • Use Add Row to add a new line.
  • Use the connector OR to add synonyms or alternative terms to each line.
