What is EndNote?
EndNote is bibliographic management software. References can be typed or downloaded from Library databases. References added to the EndNote software are stored in an EndNote Library and can be inserted into a Word document when you are writing up your research. EndNote then automatically creates a reference list at the end of your document.
Why should I use EndNote?
EndNote is a very useful piece of software to keep track of your references and format your documents. You will save time by using EndNote as a management tool but you may have to spend time learning how to use the many features of the software. You can use EndNote Groups to organise your references.
When should I use EndNote
EndNote is available in two main formats EndNote (desktop) and EndNote, online.
EndNote (desktop) provides the complete suite of features. It is a good idea to only have one EndNote (desktop) library, but remember to keep a backup copy of your data.
EndNote, online is good for sharing references with colleagues and for use when you are away from your desktop Library.
Either format can be used but a combination of EndNote (desktop) with EndNote, online is the most flexible approach as references are easily transferred from one to the other. References can be synced between EndNote, online and your desktop Library to keep the two libraries in step.
There is also a fee based version of Endnote for iPad which provides some of the features.
EndNote is not designed for compatibility with cloud based services such as Dropbox.
KEEP A BACKUP copy or use to SHARE a compressed copy of your database file(s)
DO NOT OPEN/USE your EndNote library from that location, copy/move the files on to your computer before you open them
