Referencing management software

EndNote is a reference management tool that facilitates collaboration and streamlines research.

  • Students can obtain the latest approved version through the UniSA Library Collection - however UniSA only supports EndNote 20 & EndNote 21.
  • Staff can access EndNote through the Software Centre on their UniSA devices.

Other reference tools such as Zotero and Mendeley are freely available on the internet but not supported by UniSA.

UniSA staff and students have access to Mendeley Institutional Edition. If you have a Mendeley account, you will automatically be upgraded to the Institutional Edition. There are self-help guides and support available on their website.

EndNote do's and don'ts

Before you start using EndNote, here's what you need to know.

  • Do: store libraries on your computer's hard drive.
  • Do: only create one EndNote library for all your references.
  • Do: keep EndNote library parts together. Both the ENL file (.enl) and DATA folder (.Data) are needed for the library to work correctly.
  • Do: back up your library and working document regularly by creating a Compressed Library (see the Sync & back up tab for more information).
  • Don't: use cloud-syncing folders such as DropBox, OneDrive etc. Syncing folders corrupt EndNote libraries over time.

Install on a personal computer

Step 1: Check compatibility

  • Check if your computer and word processor are compatible with EndNote.
  • If the latest version is not compatible install an earlier version of EndNote*.

*UniSA only provides support for EndNote 20 and EndNote 21

Step 2: Open and follow the instructions exactly

Before you begin installing:

  1. Print or have the installation instructions open on your computer.
  2. Follow each step carefully so the software installs correctly.

Step 3: Download installer to desktop

  1. Uninstall any previous versions of EndNote
  2. Run the installer from your desktop (or any other folder except Downloads) to avoid being asked for a product key.

Step 4: Create an EndNote library

When you create a new library, an ENL file (.enl) and a DATA folder (.Data) will be created. Keep them in the same location with matching names.

Windows

  1. In EndNote: File > New
  2. Rename MyEndNoteLibrary to something meaningful.
  3. Save to your computer - not cloud storage (e.g. OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox).
  4. Make sure the folder your library is saved to is backed up on OneDrive (Back up your folders with OneDrive)

Mac

By default, new libraries save to Desktop, change to save to Applications folder (does not sync with iCloud). Alternatively, save to Desktop or Documents folder but disconnect from iCloud first:

  1. Apple icon > System Preferences...
  2. Select iCloud in Preferences window.
  3. Select Options (next to iCloud Drive).
  4. Un-tick the box next to Desktop & Documents folders.
  5. Make sure the folder your library is saved to is backed up on OneDrive (Back up your folders with OneDrive).

Configure preferences

Preferences allow you to customise your EndNote experience. While optional, we recommend setting preferences to help EndNote work with UniSA resources:

Step 1: Open EndNote preferences

  • Windows: Edit > Preferences
  • Mac: EndNote 21 > Settings...

Step 2: Set up Find Full Text

In the left menu, select Find Full Text. Update with the following:

  • OpenURL Path
    https://library.unisa.edu.au/go/openurl
  • Authenticate with URL:
Leave blank - OpenAthens, UniSA's authentication system, is not compatible with EndNote
  • To comply with copyright and fair use of eResources:
Untick Automatically invoke Find Full Text on newly-imported references

Step 3: Set up URLs & links

To access PDFs subscribed to by the University of South Australia, in the left menu, select URLs & Links then copy and paste these URLs:

  • ISI Base URL (all in one line):
    http://gateway.isiknowledge.com/gateway/Gateway.cgi
  • OpenURL Argument (all in one line):
    ?sid=ISI:WoS&aufirst=AUFIRST&aulast=AULAST&issn=ISSN&isbn=ISBN&atitle=ATITLE&title=TITLE&volume= VOLUME&issue=ISSUE&date=DATE&spage=SPAGE&epage=EPAGE&rft.doi=DOI

Select Apply then OK.

EndNote online

If you are using EndNote over multiple devices we recommend using EndNote online.

  • Use EndNote online with your EndNote desktop account.
  • Sync with desktop to add references on the go.
  • Collaborate with others by sharing your references.
  • Use after leaving the University.

Create an EndNote online account

If you have an account with Web of Science or InCites (databases) then your login details will be the same for EndNote. Alternatively register in EndNote > Help > EndNote online, or via this link:

Access EndNote after University

The EndNote desktop account will not be accessible after leaving University of South Australia. UniSA does not consider Alumni to be authorised users and does not purchase any licensed software for Alumni. Alumni are not covered by the Acceptable use of IT policy https://i.unisa.edu.au/policies-and-procedures/university-policies/corporate/c-22/.

You will still be able to access your free EndNote online account.
