UniSA Library resources for teaching staff on using eReserve to manage course readings

Add specific types of reading

Blog post readings

eReserve doesn't have an option for blog post readings. To ensure a properly-formatted citation, therefore, submit your requests as newspaper articles: the resultant citation is close to that required for blog posts. Please use the following guidelines when submitting a request for a blog post reading.

  1. Begin your reading request by selecting Add > New Journal Reading.
  2. Enter the blog post citation information as follows:
    • Journal title: The name of the blog.
    • Organisation: The name of the organisation, company or website which publishes the blog; in some cases, this may be the same as the name of the blog itself.
    • Volume: Leave this field blank.
    • Year published: The year in which the specific blog post was posted online.
    • Reading title: The title of the specific blog post.
    • Genre: From the drop-down menu, select Newspaper Article.
    • Author: Select People and enter the name of the person who wrote the blog post. If no name is provided, select Organisation and enter the same name you put in the Organisation field.
    • Kind: Select Link, and enter the link to the blog post.
    • Pages: Select Not Paginated. In the field that appears below, enter the word count for the blog post.
    • Article date: Enter the date that the specific blog post was posted online.

Law cases

eReserve has guidelines specific to adding legal material as a reading.

Begin your reading request by selecting Add > New Journal Reading, and from the Genre drop-down menu, select Legal Case.

Enter the case citation data using the following guidelines:

  • Journal title: the full name of the case report series (e.g. Commonwealth Law Reports or Supreme Court of South Australia)
  • Organisation: Leave blank
  • Volume:  Only fill this field in if the case has series numbers. This is indicated when the citation has round brackets around the year rather than square brackets.
  • Year published: Year of the case
  • Short title:  The abbreviated version of the case report series (e.g. CLR or SASC). Although this isn't a required field for Legal Cases in eReserve, it is required when the reading list is set to use an AGLC citation style: in such circumstances, it's necessary to enter the standard abbreviation for the relevant case report series; omitting this metadata will result in the case being cited as Unreported.
  • Number:  Fill in only if there was more than one issue of the case series produced in that year. This is indicated by the number following the date in square brackets in the citation.
  • Reading title:  The full title of the case
  • Authors:  Leave blank
  • Pages:  Number of the first page of the case report (usually listed as the last number in the case citation)
  • Section: (optional) Can be used for pinpoint referencing a particular line/paragraph/section of the case.

Reports

In eReserve, reports are a subset of books. When adding a report as a new reading, select New book reading, then select Report from the Genre dropdown list.

A report reading is frequently located on a website, however if it is contained in a PDF or Word Document it is a Book reading, and not a Website reading. This will ensure a properly formatted citation.

Standards

Please Note: before using TechStreet standards, it is necessary to sign up for an individual account. Please include a short note in the “Note for Students” section of your reading request, advising students of this requirement. Instructions and links for how to create an account can be found on the Library Collection record for Techstreet.

  1. Submit your reading request via Add > New book reading.
  2. In the Notes for students field, enter the following: Access to Techstreet standards requires an individual account. For more information, see https://find.library.unisa.edu.au/permalink/f/5i3pka/UNISA_ALMA61179988110001831
  3. Enter the standard title in both the Book title and Reading title fields.
  4. From the Genre drop-down menu, select Document.
  5. Enter the author/publisher (e.g. Standards Australia) in both the Publisher and Author fields, remembering to also select Organisation (rather than People) above the Author field.
  6. Enter the standard number in the Edition field.
  7. Enter all other required citation information in the relevant fields.
